Description
Another YB-5 dubbed “Black Cherry” – there is a hard to photograph deep red tint to this bass
Performance Guitar has been around for a long time ( 1976 ) . The founder , Mr.Kenny Sugai and his longtime assistant Yasu Yokote are based in Hollywood, and they have long been many an LA players go-to source for great repairs, mods, modded pedals , guitars , and basses. As I see it , if you have been in business for nearly 40 years you must know what you are doing and you certainly must be doing it well.
What makes Performance different than other small production jazz basses ? Kenny and Yasu make everything except the hardware and strings in house. Bodies, necks, pickups, preamps , finishes. A more common practice among many of today’s high end JB builders is to farm out the making of bodies, necks and finishes. Does this make the Performance a better bass ? Not based on this one point. Does this make the more “produced” basses lesser instruments – not necessarily. I ask you to consider the nearly 60 years experience combined between these 2 gents and the fact that they designed and use their own proprietary electronics : the result is a true handmade jazz bass style bass with a distinct and powerful voice. Shop around and compare all of the better Jazz Basses. Compare the basses , their prices , their quality , and the value they each offer.
